The Netgear WNR200 is a Wireless N Router which is also compatible with older ‘g’ and ‘b’ wireless devices. Like all Netgear routers setup is a simple 1-2-3 procedure complete with color coded cabling, buttons and ports. The installation Wizard CD works great for Windows computers, while Mac user setup is done via Safari or Firefox web browser and Netgears simple “routerlogin.net” URL.
The Netgear WNR200 Wireless N Router features four hard wired 10/100 mbps ethernet ports, 1 Wan port and wireless data transfer rates up to 300mbps. the Netgear WNR200 has a front mounted WPS (Wireless Protected Setup) provides easy “Push N Connect” setup for WPS equipped wireless devices such as printers, computers, cameras and peripherals.
The Netgear WNR200 is part of the Netgear RangeMax wireless routers and as such has outstanding range and performance. In our tests we found the range of the Netgear WNR200 out performed similar Cisco, Linksys and D-Link wireless N Routers. Speed tests for the WNR200 ranged from 63mbps to 274mbps with an average transfer speed of 149mbps. We like the No-Antenna, black, rectangular style of the Netgear WNR200. It looks great on the desktop, can be installed flat or standing upright and can also be wall mounted. We found the best performance when standing upright.

Netgear’s Web Based setup utility automatically checks for updates each time you login into the setup menu. On initial setup we recommend that you do not upgrade the firmware when you first log into the setup utility. Select No, if the setup utility indicates that firmware updates are available for your router then first set up the router and test it to make sure it’s working properly. Once you have tested the router is working properly then log back into the setup utility and update the firmware if required.
Shaw ISP users:
Here’s an important tip if you are using a Netgear router with Shaw Cable as your ISP in Alberta or BC. In order for your Shaw Email account to work properly and for you to send and receive emails through a Netgear router connected to a Shaw Cable modem you will need to change your incoming and outgoing mail server names from “shawmail” to “shawmail.ed.shawcable.net”.
WPS Setup: We found the WPS – Wireless Protected Setup to be hit and miss with this router. Some peripherals set up quickly with the WPS, while others wouldn’t set up automatically and required manual set up. Other manufacturers routers also have exhibited the same issue with WPS therefore we do not conclude that this is a problem with any specific router but rather with the WPS technology …. Simply put sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. We do know on trick that makes the WPS registration work sometimes when initially it doesn’t.
Some peripherals tell you to press the WPS button on the router first while other tell you to press the WPS button on the router second. We have found in our tests that if your first attempt is unsuccessful then reverse the procedure and try again. 70% of the time the WPS worked when the procedure was reversed. In other words if the instructions say press the WPS button on the router first and then the device and that doesn’t work for you try it again only this time press the WPS button on the device first and router second or vice versa.
